How do I choose a facility?

What should I look for in an Alzheimer’s Care Facility?
Because of the nature of Alzheimer’s, there are specific things to look for. Building design and decoration should reflect a calm environment that plays upon all four senses (sight, smell, touch and taste). Special attention should be paid to color and pattern to reduce confusion and agitation. Staff should be specially trained in all aspects of Alzheimer's and related dementias. This is true of all Marquis Friendship Houses.

When choosing a facility specializing in caring for memory related illnesses, consideration should be given to the following areas:
  • Location: Is the facility close to family and friends? Making any move can be traumatic. That trauma is compounded with the added complications associated with memory loss. Help ease the transition by choosing a facility that loved ones can visit easily.
  • Atmosphere: Has the environment been planned with specific design and decorative features that minimize confusion? Don't underestimate the importance of the environment in reducing agitation.
  • Qualifications of staff: Is the staff specially trained to meet the unique needs of the confused resident? Do they appear patient and understanding when dealing with this distinct population?
